Quilts to warm a winter day: You Are What You Eat

Recently,  severely cold winter weather caused by the polar vortex swept across much of the United States and Canada. We started thinking about quilts in warm, sunny tropical colors of hot oranges, yellows, red, and pinks. They're the kind of quilts that make you feel less chilly just by looking at them.  From Houston, here's one of our favorites.

You Are What You Eat, 72 x 54.5",  by Kathy York, Austin, Texas

Honorable Mention award winner in the Whimsical Art Quilts category, Kathy writes, "If you are what you eat, then the deer in my neighborhood must be made of flowers- because they ate all of mine !" This wonderful original design displays so many of Kathy's outstanding skills as a fiber artist. She hand-dyed her own fabric and hand-drew all the flower batiks which comprise the body of the deer and the lower inner border.

To assemble this art quilt, Kathy used fusible applique, machine quilt, and hand quilting with 6 strand embroidery floss. The flowers are carefully embellished with large hand-stitching with embroidery thread.  These lovely raspberry pinks and yellow-oranges just radiate a sun-kissed warmth. Kathy's award is  certainly well-deserved.

For more detailed information on the construction of this quilt, please see Kathy York's blog post, Urban Deer.

  1. Thanks for the lovely spotlight on my deer and the link to my blog! So glad to see my little deer getting to travel around cyber-space! Also, a small correction....I did not use any beads on this quilt. What you are seeing are large hand stitching from the embroidery floss, which adds a lovely texture to the flowers on the deer's body. Thanks again!

  2. It takes a special person to find fun and beauty in the destruction of her garden. I can see that deer has made the rounds of the neighborhood... A very charming piece of work!
